Six Alloys That Are Improving Speed, Safety and Reliability in The Motorsport Industry
Although carbon fibre is probably the most well-known material used in the construction of motorsport vehicles, alloys are an equally valuable but perhaps slightly less visible player in determining the key characteristics of today’s top track vehicles. If your understanding of “alloys” goes no further than eye-catching wheels, take a look at these six alloys that make a significant contribution to the contemporary motorsport landscape.
ALUMINIUM ALLOY
Its excellent strength/weight ratio means aluminium is commonly used on vehicles where mass matters. Add in its superb fire resistant properties, ductility and ability to withstand high temperatures, and it’s clear why everything from engine blocks to pistons are made from this versatile alloy – particularly 6111.
MAGNESIUM ALLOY
One of the stipulations of the FIA is that F1 cars must have wheels made from only one of two choices of magnesium alloy. RZ5 is popularly used for gearbox casings, whilst WE54 parts have been used for several different motor racing components. Magnesium alloys use magnesium’s superb performance at excessive temperatures and resistance to corrosion, coupled with its light weight to produce safer parts without compromising on performance.
TITANIUM ALLOY
Light, strong and resistant to corrosion; it’s clear why titanium alloys benefit from such extensive popularity in the challenging conditions that characterise motorsport. Used in suspension linkages, valves, suspension springs and exhaust systems, alloys such as Ti-6AI-4V are a safe and suitable choice.
COPPER NICKEL ALLOYS
A distinctive trait of alloys such as 90/10 is that it doesn’t need an additional layer before being used in cooling systems, for example those found in premium cars and other vehicles. The use of copper nickel in these environments helps to minimise the risk of material failure – a serious issue, particularly when braking or when a hydraulic suspension system is under consideration.
15CVD6 STEEL ALLOY
Commonly used to make roll cages, track and push rods and suspension components, this alloy gives strong components that can cope with significant mechanical stress. Because it can be easily welded, it’s ideal for components that require a customised shape or are awkward to form from less easily joined materials.
CHROMIUM NICKEL ALLOY
This type of alloy, typified by products such as Alloy 625, is widely used in motorsport where there is likely to be exposure to corrosive materials (the undercarriage, for example), or elsewhere in the vehicle.
The incredible diversity of alloys and the ease with which metals can be mixed in varying proportions to give a specific end result ensures that there will always be a place for them in the evolving world of motorsport. Constant innovation and the provision of fresh answers to the complex problems that motorsports presents makes alloys a versatile and adaptable option that produce outstanding results.
